Celtic target Armando Gonzalez close to equalling Chivas record set by forrmer Man United and…

Reported Celtic transfer target Armando Gonzalez is close to equalling a record for Chivas that was set by former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Javier Hernandez.

Gonzalez was linked with Celtic earlier this year but the rumours about a possible approach for the forward have quietened of late.

Julian Araujo could help sell the Celtic project to his fellow Mexican international but the gossip in his homeland suggests that only Feyenoord have enquired about Gonzalez. In the meantime, he is focusing on scoring goals and is eyeing up Hernandez’s record.

Armando Gonzalez’s closes in on Chicharito’s Chivas record

The 22-year-old’s two goals for Chivas against Santos Laguna took his tally to eight in the 2026 Clausara and keeps his side in contention for the title as well.

He now has 20 goals in all competitions which means that he is one away from equalling Hernandez’s record of 21 goals for Chivas in the 2009/10 season.

Stats Javier Hernandez (2009/10) Armando Gonzalez (2025/26)

Games 28 28

Goals 21 20

Age 21 22

That was enough to see Chicarito earn his big move to Man United that summer, where he became an instant fan favourite.

If that wasn’t enough, he could also become the first player in Chivas history to win back-to-back golden boots after winning it last season.

Armando Gonzalez’s Chivas form could be a bad thing for Celtic

On paper, Gonzalez is the prolific goalscorer that Celtic are crying out for.

Realistically, there is every chance he could score 30-plus goals in the side and adapt to European football.

However, with every record broken and the likes of Borussia Dortmund and others sniffing around, his price tag will go up even more, and playing in a ‘top five’ European league could appeal more.

The 2026 transfer window is still months away, but what is the number one position Celtic need to improve this summer?📝

We know that the Celtic board are reluctant to part with their cash reserves at the best of times but there will have to be a fixed fee that everyone agrees on if he is to be the striker to take the Hoops forward.
