Jadon Sancho is reportedly closing in on what has been described as a “dream” return to Borussia Dortmund, with German outlet Bild indicating the move is now increasingly likely as his Manchester United exit looms.
The winger, currently on loan at Aston Villa, is expected to leave Old Trafford permanently this summer, with multiple reports suggesting Manchester United have already decided his future lies away from the club.
According to reports in Germany, a third spell at Dortmund is gathering momentum, with the Bundesliga side’s hierarchy now more open to the deal. The move has been described as “very likely,” with discussions progressing behind the scenes.
Sancho’s contract at United is set to expire at the end of the season, and while the club retain an option to extend, insiders suggest there is no intention to do so. Instead, United are prepared to cut ties with a player who has endured a difficult and often turbulent five-year spell since his £73 million move from Dortmund in 2021.
Dortmund’s interest is being driven by sporting director Sebastian Kehl, with head coach Niko Kovac also reportedly giving his approval for the transfer. The German club are believed to view Sancho as a player capable of rediscovering his best form in a familiar environment, having previously flourished there between 2017 and 2021.
Sancho rose to prominence at Dortmund, registering 38 Bundesliga goals and establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents before his move to England. However, his time at Manchester United has been marked by inconsistency, off-field issues and a high-profile fallout with former manager Erik ten Hag.
Recent loan spells — including returns to Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa — have failed to fully revive his career, with limited output this season further underlining his struggles for form and confidence.
Why Sancho needs to leave
At Manchester United, the relationship appears irreparably broken. The club have moved on, the player has spent more time on loan than in the first team in recent seasons, and there is little indication he will be reintegrated. Staying would only prolong a stagnation that has already cost him momentum during key developmental years.
More importantly, Sancho’s performances suggest he needs a system that trusts him. At Dortmund, he previously thrived in a structured but expressive attacking setup, where he was given freedom and confidence — two elements that have been notably absent during his time in England.
There is also a psychological dimension. His earlier return to Dortmund in 2024 was described as “like coming home,” highlighting how environment and familiarity can directly impact his performances.
