Ward-Prowse sees draw as starting point for vital run

It’s now or never for Burnley if they are to put run together that gives them a sliver of hope in their battle against relegation.

That’s the message from James Ward-Prowse, who believes Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Bournemouth is a solid foundation to build from ahead of Burnley’s final eight games of the campaign.

The Clarets’ chances are thin, with Scott Parker’s side nine points from safety, but the midfielder says they must battle until the very end.

“I think the position is obvious,” he told Burnley’s YouTube channel. “It's clear what we need to achieve.

“Today was a good starting point, if you like, with a clean sheet and a point, so it's important that we maintain that momentum now and hopefully put a good run together.”

Ward-Prowse was speaking after completing his first 90 minutes since making the loan move from West Ham in January.

It’s been a tough season for the 11-time England international, whose last appearance before arriving at Turf Moor was back in September.

“I’m feeling physically better week by week,” he added.

“Obviously it's a long time without any game time, so it's important to build week by week. I’m growing in confidence and starting to enjoy my football again.”

Ward-Prowse also discussed his role on and off the pitch as an elder statesman in the dressing room.

“I think everybody leads in their own ways,” the 31-year-old said.

“I'm not maybe a typical shouter and bawler – it's more about speaking in the right moments and when you speak, speak well.

“You can feel the game changing, the momentum shifts, and it's important that we try to use our heads and experience to manage those moments and ensure we control the game.

“Even if we don't have the ball, we're still in control.”
