Manchester United are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes for £69million. But the Red Devils will face competition from Real Madrid, who've renewed their long-standing interest.

United plan to sign at least one midfielder this summer, having confirmed that Casemiro will leave upon the expiry of his contract in June. It's claimed that Casemiro has personally recommended Brazilian compatriot Guimaraes as his successor.

Reuters add that initial contacts pointed towards a smooth negotiation, but now Madrid have entered the race. The La Liga champions want to sign Guimaraes after missing out on him in 2022.

Newcastle stole a march on the likes Madrid and Arsenal by agreeing a deal with Lyon worth up to £40m. The 28-year-old has since become a mainstay in Eddie Howe's side and his absence was felt in their humiliating 7-2 loss against Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United have also been linked with his Newcastle team-mate, Sandro Tonali, although a double swoop would be unlikely. Also on the Red Devils' shortlist are Tyler Adams, Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, Joao Gomes and Adam Wharton - all of whom are proven in the Premier League.

Getting Casemiro's £18.2m salary off the books will free-up cash for United, who are on course to reap the financial and sporting rewards of qualifying for the Champions League under interim manager Michael Carrick. Guimaraes is under contract at St James' Park until 2028 and Newcastle are in no rush to sell.

The Magpies are, however, desperate to get him back on the pitch. Guimaraes travelled to Barcelona to support his team-mates after returning to training on Monday.

"We hope he won't be too far away," Howe addded. "Once he is back with us we will have to assess him.

"I know he has been working incredibly hard on his rehab with physios and doctors. I think he will be in a good place. Yeah he is such a big player, by the time the international break has ended we hope we will be active and available."

Newcastle host local rivals Sunderland at noon on Sunday for the Tyne-Wear derby, having lost the reverse fixture 1-0 back in December. They'll won't be back in action until April 11 due to the international break and FA Cup quarter-finals.
