Manchester United“made contact”with“main attraction”as Patrick Dorgu could be affected

One of Manchester United’s latest transfer targets could affect Patrick Dorgu’s future in the side, despite his impressive form under Michael Carrick.

Manchester United’s summer transfer plans won’t have been fully decided just yet, especially given they are yet to confirm who will be in charge for the 2026/27 season.

Michael Carrick has impressed since he joined the club, but CEO Omar Berrada appears to still be searching for alternative options while Carrick prepares to face AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League on Friday evening.

Carrick had to field questions on United’s injury list, as one defender looks set to return in time for the game, but the defensive lineup could change dramatically next summer.

Harry Maguire is yet to sign a new contract, with his current deal expiring at the end of the campaign. Matthijs de Ligt should finally be fit and available once again, after suffering a back injury for the last few months. Patrick Dorgu could also be affected.

Dorgu began his United career as a left-wing-back, but moved forward to the left flank when Carrick first joined the club. He played two games before picking up an injury against Arsenal, to which Carrick has now said he’s “a bit further down the line” than Lisandro Martínez.

United transfer could change Dorgu’s future

As per Sacha Tavolieri on X, United have now “made contact” with Ajax’s Mika Godts, who is said to be one of the “main attractions” of the summer transfer window.

Godts is just 20 years old and has scored 14 goals with 11 assists in 35 appearances for Ajax this season from left wing. He would join United to compete with Matheus Cunha for a spot to the left of Bruno Fernandes.

If United were to sign Godts, Dorgu would be forced back to left-back to compete with Luke Shaw, rather than remaining as an option in attack.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox attempted to sign Antoine Semenyo in January, so there is a clear want for a new left-winger, but any new addition would massively impact Dorgu’s position.

What about Amass and Leon?

In the first half of the season, Harry Amass impressed on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship, earning himself a switch to Norwich City for the second six months of the season. Whereas Diego Leon has stayed in the Under-21s setup and showed his outstanding physicality against other youngsters.

Both Amass and Leon will be hungry for a first-team spot next season, but if Dorgu is to drop back to defence, they could be forced out of the club once again on another season-long loan.

Luke Shaw’s future could also be impacted if United believe the left-back won’t be able to play week in, week out due to injury issues. This is very important with United returning to the Champions League.

If Carrick remains in charge of the club, he may prefer Shaw to stay, but a new head coach may prefer a fresh start on the left side of defence.
