Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is understood to be in "advanced talks" with Manchester United - and his arrival would complete a dream midfield for the Reds.

Casemiro's departure at the end of the season will leave United with only two natural defensive midfielders. Despite United fans chanting "one more year, one more year Casemiro" interim manager Michael Carrick made it clear the situation regarding the Brazilian's future has not changed.

However, Guimaraes is understood to be available for around £69m, while Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is also of interest. As the Newcastle skipper continues to be linked with a move to Old Trafford, the Manchester Evening News looks at the dream midfield he would help complete, should he arrive.

Reuters understands Guimaraes is in talks with the Reds over a potential £69m move. Should he arrive, he would step into the shoes left behind by Casemiro. The ex-Lyon midfielder would be the perfect midfield lynchpin alongside Kobbie Mainoo, who has been reborn under Michael Carrick, having been frozen out by the sacked Ruben Amorim.

If United are able to convince Bruno Fernandes to either see out the rest of his contract, which expires next year, or even commit to a new deal after the World Cup, United would possess one of the best midfields in the Premier League.

Flanking Bruno would be Bryan Mbeumo on the right wing and Matheus Cunha on the left wing, while Benjamin Sesko, who has grown significantly under Carrick, would lead the line. However, United would likely need another deep midfield option, as only Manuel Ugarte would be waiting in the wings in the event of Mainoo or Guimaraes being injured.

It's understood United will be in the market for at least two central midfielders this summer. With Guimaraes appearing to be one option, Palace's Wharton may be the other.

Earlier this year, several reports claimed £70m may be enough to convince the Eagles to part with the England international. He would either be waiting in the wings to fill in for Mainoo or Guimaraes or he may even look to push one of the midfield stars out of the starting eleven.

Mason Mount would also be pushing for a place in the middle of the park. The ex-Chelsea ace has had many bright moments for United, but his injury record has held him back from achieving more at Old Trafford.

Nevertheless, if he can get his physical issues in order, Carrick or any other United manager would value his experience and quality within the squad. The size of this summer's transfer budget would also depend on the Reds earning qualification for next season's Champions League.

Carrick has dragged the Reds up to third position and with fifth likely to be enough to book a place in Europe's elite competition, United are in an excellent position heading into the last eight matches of the campaign.
