Manchester United are monitoring Wolves' Joao Gomes as they plot an overhaul of their midfield during the summer transfer window.

Gomes, 25, is expected to leave Molineux this summer, with Wolves set to be relegated to the Championship, and his recent displays at the heart of their midfield have caught the eye.

The Brazilian has been integral to some improved displays from Rob Edwards' side, who have beaten both Aston Villa and Liverpool recently, with Gomes impressing in both games and finding the back of the net against Villa.

United are among a number of Premier League clubs to have looked at Gomes this season, with interest from some of the division's elite sides ramping up again in recent weeks.

Gomes joined Wolves from Flamengo in the summer of 2023 for a fee of €18.7million and has since forced his way into the Brazil squad with his displays in the Premier League.

He signed a new contract at Wolves last April, but with the club looking almost certain to drop out of the Premier League this season, he will be available for transfer during the summer window.

United are in the market for two midfielders, with Casemiro leaving when his contract expires, and Manuel Ugarte set to be sold, having struggled to make an impact since his move from Paris Saint-Germain.

They have targeted Premier League experience under Ineos and have cast their eye over several options this season. Elliot Anderson is high on the list for the summer, but the 23-year-old is also a priority target for Manchester City.

United retain an interest in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, despite his form falling away this season after he failed to secure a move to Old Trafford last summer, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton is another player United have watched, along with Alex Scott at Bournemouth.

Newcastle's struggles this season and their likely absence from next season's Champions League have also put United on alert about the availability of their midfielders, with 25-year-old Sandro Tonali likely to push for an exit from St James' Park in the summer.

United are one of several clubs interested in Tonali, while they have also been linked with a move for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes. Real Madrid are also reported to be keen on the 28-year-old Brazil international.
