Bournemouth step up winger move – Post-World Cup sale could suit the Cherries

Andrés Gómez

Bournemouth’s interest in Vasco da Gama’s Andrés Gómez, which we covered earlier this week, apparently has moved into a more decisive phase, as the Brazilian club begin to deal with growing pressure around one of their most valuable attacking assets.

The situation is no longer just about potential. Internally, Vasco are already shaping a clear strategy around the Colombian’s future. The plan is to resist immediate movement and protect the player’s trajectory through the coming months.

That stance is tied to both performance and timing. Gómez has become a key attacking figure in Rio de Janeiro, and the club see further room for growth before any sale is considered. At the same time, there is a strong belief that his market value could rise significantly with international exposure.

The World Cup plays a central role in that thinking. Gómez has been involved in recent Colombia squads, and Vasco are counting on that visibility to strengthen their position in future negotiations. As a result, the club are prepared to absorb interest now, rather than act on it.

In addition, Vasco hold a strong contractual position. They signed Gómez permanently from Rennes in a deal worth €5m (£4.3m) earlier this year, and tied him down to a long-term contract running until 2028. That gives them control over the timing of any potential exit.

His performances support that approach. In the current season, Gómez has delivered four goals and three assists in 12 appearances, confirming his growing importance in the attacking structure.

Situation advances after new contact

Only after that internal positioning does the latest development come into play.

According to RTI Esporte, Bournemouth have now gone beyond simple monitoring and made enquiries for Gómez. The Premier League side are testing the conditions of a potential deal, signalling a more concrete level of interest.

This represents a clear shift from the earlier stage, when the player was simply being tracked from a distance. Now, there is direct movement – even if it has not yet reached the level of a formal offer.

What happens next

This confirmation from Brazil reinforces that Gómez is firmly on Bournemouth’s shortlist. This is no longer speculative interest. The club are actively assessing whether to move.

However, Vasco’s strategy complicates things. By targeting a post-World Cup sale, they are effectively positioning the player for a higher valuation. Any deal, therefore, is likely to become expensive.

But it’s not really bad news for Bournemouth. There should still exist a layer of uncertainty around Gómez’s ceiling. His numbers are strong, but much of that output has come in state competitions, often against weaker opposition. At a higher level, some questions remain about his end product.

That said, the raw tools are clear. Gómez consistently beats defenders and progresses play. If he sharpens his finishing and crossing over the coming months, his profile could change quickly.

Should that development arrive, he becomes a far more complete attacking asset. In that scenario, Bournemouth’s early interest could prove well timed, placing them in a strong position ahead of wider competition.

Andrés Gómez is currently valued by Transfermarkt at €8m, although Vasco would want more.
