Daniel Farke says it would be a “positive surprise” if Dominic Calvert-Lewin made the England squad for March’s internationals but wouldn’t be shocked if he did not make the cut.

Calvert-Lewin has not played for his country since 2021 but his form across December - in which he scored seven goals in six games - sparked shouts that his exile could be ended by Thomas Tuchel.

Those calls have since been questioned given his recent return of just one goal in eight Premier League games, having also missed a penalty against Crystal Palace in Leeds United’s goalless draw on Sunday.

Asked whether he would be shocked if Calvert-Lewin, who has 11 caps for his country, did not make the cut, Farke replied: “No, not shocked. It would be a positive surprise if he gets the call up, because he wasn't involved in the recent years. He has played a fantastic, fantastic season so far.

“But also the season’s not over. It's important right now that he chips in and concentrates on top performances with us and hopefully also more goals and more assists.

“It’s up to Thomas to make the calls, and he doesn't need my recommendations. I would always back Dominic to play on this level, and he would deserve it, but wouldn't say that would be a shock if he's not involved.”

Farke, a close ally of Tuchel, was meanwhile delighted that Leeds midfielder Anton Stach has received his first call up for Germany in nearly four years. He will have a number of players out on international duty this break.

Most notable include Welsh quartet Ethan Ampadu, Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon and Daniel James and Gabriel Gudmundsson of Sweden, who will all play in crucial Cup play-offs next week.

Farke says he attains a good relationship with all respective national team coaches, but would not be drawn into whether Tuchel had contacted him in relation to Calvert-Lewin.

He said: “I keep it very trustful. So this is more my principle with all the national team coaches - whenever a coach calls me and wants to speak with me about a player, I never speak in public about this, because pretty often they want to do it in a trustful way.

“But in general, believe me with all the national team coaches, I've got a quite good relationship, and there could be a conversation here and there and also Thomas is one of them.”
