Shock Leeds United team-up could make the World Cup – Forgotten flop meets £16m star

National teams are still pushing for World Cup qualification this month, and Leeds United have a handful of players vying for a place in this summer’s tournament.

As we prepare to take on Brentford this weekend, an international break follows where plenty of Leeds’ squad are in crucial action for their nations.

The World Cup looms this summer. In turn, multiple players in the squad still have a playoff in store to book their place.

Joel Piroe called up to Suriname squad for vital World Cup playoff vs Bolivia

A newest international member of Leeds’ squad is striker Joel Piroe. The £16million signing from Swansea was a Netherlands youth international, but had dual nationality with the prospect of representing Suriname.

Earlier this season, Piroe opted to switch his allegiances to the South American nation. In the process, Piroe is looking to give his nation a chance at qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in their history. He was confirmed in their squad for the international break this week.

To make it to the summer tournament, Piroe’s Suriname must make their way through two qualifying playoffs. Up first in the semi-final are Bolivia, facing off at a neutral venue in Guadalupe, Mexico.

Should Suriname make their way past fellow South American opposition, they will take on Iraq in the final to decide who makes it to the World Cup in June.

Shock Leeds United team-up for Suriname – Joel Piroe to join forces with Jay-Roy Grot

Interestingly, there’s another Leeds-affiliated forward in the ranks for Suriname this month.

Confirmed in their international announcement, alongside Piroe is former Leeds forward Jay-Roy Grot, currently playing for Danish outfit Odense Boldklub.

Grot was part of the mass influx of talent signed from abroad during Victor Orta’s first summer window in charge of Leeds’ recruitment.

His time at Leeds was largely forgettable, scoring once. His sole Leeds goal came in a game we ended up losing. Grot towered in a headed equaliser in a 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in March 2017. A grim snow-flurried Elland Road outing under Paul Heckingbottom.

Grot, 27, has three Suriname caps to his name, notching one assist in a 4-0 win over El Salvador back in November.
