Sean Dyche says there was one philosophy he found really hard to implement at Everton

Sean Dyche split opinions among the Everton fanbase.

Many recognise the good work Sean Dyche did early on in his Everton tenure, helping the club to avoid relegation through PSR challenges.

But, Dyche’s stock really fell towards the end of his reign, with results and performances ultimately not good enough.

It appeared as though some of the first-team squad didn’t really buy into his tactics anymore, and that was evinced by the immediate resurgence when David Moyes replaced him.

That said, Dyche has just come out and explained that Everton players didn’t really take to one of his philosophies in training.

Sean Dyche says Everton players didn’t really take to his training ideology

Speaking on The Boot Room, Dyche explained that it was difficult to implement a ‘train as you play’ mentality at Finch Farm.

“I thought train as you play,” the 54-year-old said.

“And I tried to bring this into my coaching career with different acceptance from players.

“At Burnley, everyone had to wear pads and boots, proper boots to train in. We train properly all the time.

“That got harder when I went to Everton and Forest. Times change, people change, life changes, you know what I mean? But I believe train as you play.”

Dyche banned snoods and hats at Everton’s training ground, as he wanted to replicate the feel of a game.

“This has been going round for years and it drives me mad,” Dyche said in 2023.

“Unless I’ve been out of the game for too long, you’re not allowed to wear hats when you play on a Saturday, you’re not allowed to wear snoods when you play on a Saturday and you have to, by the rules, wear shin pads. It is not rocket science.”

The 52-year-old’s old-school approaches didn’t really seem to work at Nottingham Forest, either.

Dyche has actually been linked to Tottenham Hotspur recently, as they battle to avoid relegation.
