Sunderland will be looking to extend their impressive league record.

Sunderland will be looking to extend their impressive league record against arch rivals Newcastle United when the latest Tyne-Wear derby takes place at St James Park on Sunday afternoon.

It has already been a memorable return to the Premier League for Regis Le Bris and his players after they produced eye-catching performances against the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal to solidify their place as one of the top flight’s surprise packages this season.

However, it was the narrow home win against the Magpies that will sit at the very top of a list of the fondest memories of the season so far - and completing a league double over Eddie Howe’s side would only add to the positivity. But how have the two sides fared in their last five meetings?

January 2024: Sunderland 0-3 Newcastle United (FA Cup Third Round)

Premier League Newcastle claimed their first win in a derby since August 2011 as they saw off a Sunderland side still plying their trade in the Championship. An own goal from Dan Ballard put the Magpies in front before Miguel Almiron punished a defensive error to setup Alexander Isak to double the visitors lead in the early stages of the second half. Isak then added a third goal from the penalty spot to confirm the Magpies place in the fourth round.
