Liverpool’s need for a defensive midfielder has seen one of Europe’s best linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool are set for another busy summer. There probably won’t be the spend of last yet although big names will be expected to move in both directions.

Mohamed Salah is tipped to head to MLS or Saudi Arabia with home grown stars like Harvey Elliot and Joe Gomez also potentially leaving Anfield behind. Arne Slot’s issues this season have also highlighted the need for more depth on the wings and in the middle of defence with a defensive midfielder or deep-lying playmaker also a priority.

Eduardo Camavinga in talks with Premier League clubs

According to transfer journalist Graeme Bailey, writing for TEAMtalk, one Liverpool target is already in talks over a move to the Premier League: “Intermediaries acting on behalf of Eduardo Camavinga have begun briefing clubs that the Real Madrid midfielder will be available for transfer this summer, with Liverpool currently leading the chase, but with Manchester United and Chelsea both also registering early interest, TEAMtalk can confirm.

“TEAMtalk understands the France international would be keen on a move to London, although there is a key condition attached to any potential switch: the club pursuing him would need to be competing in the UEFA Champions League. Liverpool are also long-term admirers of the midfielder and remain what sources have described as ‘very attentive to his situation’.”

What midfielders could Liverpool sell?

Liverpool’s midfield is well stocked, but there is a growing feeling that it is imbalanced. There were reports in January that Curtis Jones was keen to move to Serie A to get more game time which, added to Ryan Gravenberch signing a new deal and Dominik Szoboszlai next in line, suggests that he has been told where he is in the pecking order.

Alexis Mac Allister has had his fitness and contribution questioned this season as the Argentine international approaches a pivotal moment in his Liverpool career. With two years left on his contract, it is make or break time and he should either be offered a new deal or sold to the highest bidder. Camavinga is an obvious replacement in that he would be a square peg in a square hole and it is no surprise to see other specialists linked. If a new midfielder is announced first, Richard Hughes will have agents knocking on the door asking what their player’s transfer fee is.
