Manchester United have been linked with a sensational double transfer swoop.
United are currently experiencing their most promising period in several years under interim boss Michael Carrick. Since being appointed as manager until the end of this season in January, Carrick has guided the team to seven Premier League wins, one draw and a single defeat, propelling them to third in the Premier League table.
With just eight matches remaining, United stand a strong chance of securing Champions League qualification once again. Question marks remain over whether Carrick will be handed the position permanently at the season's end.
Yet, securing a Champions League spot would still prove enormously beneficial for the club in terms of attracting greater talent in the transfer window and progressing to the next level.
Now, with transfer speculation rife, The Manchester Evening News brings you two of the biggest stories from Old Trafford.
£44m target monitored

United have added Wolves' Joao Gomes to their transfer shortlist as they look to revamp their midfield this summer. The 25-year-old Brazilian was repeatedly linked with United during the January transfer window but Wolves refused to entertain offers due to their battle against relegation.
However, with Rob Edwards' side set to drop down to the Championship, Gomes is expected to leave Molineux this summer. This has sparked even greater interest from several Premier League clubs, including United, in recent weeks.
Gomes arrived at Wolves from Flamengo in the summer of 2023 for £15million. But following his impressive performances for Wolves, which earned him a spot in the Brazil squad, as well as signing a new contract last April, his valuation has risen to £44m, as reported in November. That price tag may decrease in the summer given Wolves' impending relegation.
'Advanced' Bruno Guimaraes talks

Another Brazilian that United are reportedly targeting this summer is Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Reuters report that the Old Trafford side are in advanced talks to bring in Guimaraes in a £69m deal.
The Magpies crashed out of the Champions League this week and look unlikely to secure qualification for the competition next season, opening the door for the 28-year-old's departure.
His compatriot, Casemiro, has already confirmed he will leave United this summer and has reportedly personally endorsed Guimaraes as his midfield replacement, highlighting his experience and leadership qualities.
Initial contacts reportedly suggest mutual interest could pave the way for a straightforward agreement. However, Real Madrid have also shown interest, having long admired the Newcastle captain.
