Ex-Albion prospect can be key player in Worthing promotion push says boss

But his boss accepts there is a lot of responsibility on his shoulders.

Teddy Jenks scored the killer second goal as Rebels beat Chelmsford 2-0 in National League south last Saturday.

The former England youth international at one stage looked set for big things as he played for the Seagulls’ under-21s.

He later moved to Aberdeen, Crawley and Forest Green and these days is an important figure in the Worthing engine room.

Rebels have not given up hope of catching leaders Dorking Wanderers but their most likely fate looks like the play-offs as they prepare to visit Totton.

Asked about Jenks’ progress after the recent draw with Maidenhead, Worthing boss Adam Hinshelwood said: “He is doing okay. Only okay. I think there's more to come from him.

“He is one of our stand-out players and we probably are reliant on him when others aren't playing to stand up.

“It's a lot of responsibility on another young lad.

“He has probably not played as much football as this before.

“I think sometimes that shows. If we had the squad, it would be nice to bring him out of the team for a bit and rest him up and get him going.

“But we just haven't got that, unfortunately.”

Hinshelwood looks unlikely to rotate things much now, given what happened in midweek.

He made changes for the Sussex Transport Senior Cup semi-final against Three Bridges and said he felt embarrassed and let down by the performance in a shock 4-2 defeat.

Meanwhile, second-placed Hornchurch have boosted their chances by signing centre-forward George Alexander from Eastbourne Borough.

Alexander has been a key source of goals and Borough, who are bottom of the table and six points from safety, said they were letting their under-contract frontman go reluctantly.
