Thomas Tuchel drops England World Cup squad hints as bizarre selection made

Kobbie Mainno has been handed a recall into the England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. The Manchester United midfielder has been rewarded after returning to the first-team picture and impressing since Michael Carrick's return to Old Trafford in mid-January.

Mainoo, 20, who has been capped 10 times, last featured for the Three Lions in a 2-0 win against the Republic of Ireland in September 2024. A lack of game time and drop in form at United saw him drop out of the England squad and fall down the pecking order following Thomas Tuchel's arrival at the start of 2025.

But after starting the last nine matches for United, Mainoo has worked his way back into the England fold, less than three months before the start of this summer's World Cup in the United States.

Also earning a recall is Mainoo's United teammate Harry Maguire, who is back in an England squad - like Mainoo - for the first time since September 2024 when he featured against Ireland.

Another shock return to the England fold is Leeds United's Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The 29-year-old hasn't played for the Three Lions since a cameo appearance against Ukraine at Euro 2020 but has been picked by Tuchel after reaching 10 goals in 27 Premier League matches for Leeds this season.

There is also a first call-up for Everton's James Garner, who has been included in the squad with Bournemouth's Alex Scott dropping out. Garner, 25, has been a standout performer for the Toffees this season, having started every game for David Moyes' side, scoring twice and providing five assists from midfield.

Newcastle United's Lewis Hall has got the nod after impressing since his return from an injury lay-off, with Man United's Luke Shaw missing out despite starting all 30 Premier League matches for the Reds this season.

Jason Steele, meanwhile, has been handed a surprise call into the England squad at the age of 35. The Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper is part of a four-man shot-stopping group selected by Tuchel, with the veteran ex-Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland man chosen for the first time in his senior career.
