Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been called into the England squad for the March international break against Uruguay and Japan.
United have one more game before the international break. All focus under Daniel Farke is on looking to get three points against Brentford tomorrow night.
However, there will be one eye on the international squads. Leeds’ performances in the Premier League have warranted further consideration.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin called into England squad under Thomas Tuchel
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a hot topic during Farke’s pre-match press conference. His importance to the Leeds squad was again stressed, but importantly, Farke addressed the discussion of an England call-up.
This week, the 29-year-old conducted an interview in which he outlined his primary focus on keeping United in the top flight. However, you can’t begrudge the guy hoping that his form manifests in a return to the Three Lions camp.
Now, David Ornstein has revealed that the Leeds striker is in Thomas Tuchel’s “enlarged” squad for this month’s international fixtures.
Calvert-Lewin and England face some familiar faces to Leeds fans in the coming two friendlies. Both at Wembley, Leeds first take on Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay. Then, England will be taking on Ao Tanaka’s Japan as a warm-up for the World Cup in June.
49ers masterclass proved once again as Leeds United’s free transfer Dominic Calvert-Lewin makes England squad
It’s not so long ago that Leeds fans and the general public were worried about the 49ers signing Calvert-Lewin on a free just days before the season started.
I can’t lie, I felt that sort of concern as well. There was no hiding his injury record from Everton. And, his finishing quality had often left a lot to be desired.
But what was clear to anyone who had delved into his career was that if you played to his strengths, he’ll flourish wherever he plays.
Leeds have done just that. And, to get double figures for goals from him already has proven to be an incredibly shrewd signing from the 49ers.
Whether or not he makes the final squad for the World Cup remains to be seen. However, the fact he’s in this squad now shows how well he and the club have done to make it happen.
England’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Incredible.
