At the end of last season in the Championship, there was talk that Leeds United needed a new striker. This was after Joel Piroe finished the campaign as top scorer in the league and in the team.

There were serious concerns about Piroe’s ability to deliver when the team got promoted. So Leeds dipped into the market early, signing Lukas Nmecha as a free agent. Then there was little activity in the middle of the window, before the club announced the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin later.

When the former Everton man signed, fans were concerned about the details of the move. His injury record was not the best, and his reported wages also raised eyebrows.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin earns England call up

Calvert-Lewin’s start to the season was not the best, since he barely had any pre-season. He struggled early in his career before he went on a great run of form to end last year. The Leeds United striker started making the headlines when he managed to net seven goals in the period between November and December. Talks started about a return to the England fold, but unfortunately he missed out on call ups in the last international break of the year.

This week, Thomas Tuchel decided to name him in the 35-man England squad for this upcoming international break. It has been five years since the 29-year old last made an appearance in the Three Lions jersey, and his form has now been rewarded.

Leeds United supporters forced to eat humble pie

This England call up will be celebrated the most by the 49ers. They decided to take a gamble on the striker when nobody really wanted him last summer. Credit must also go to Daniel Farke; he played a key role in getting Calvert-Lewin to join his side in the first place. The former Everton man says Farke was a huge reason why he decided to sign for the club.

Praise must also go to Calvert-Lewin himself for being able to stay fit and score goals. He has been a very important part of this Leeds United team this season, and hopefully he can end the season on a high and help the club to safety.
