Manchester United pushed for €80m signing – Huge summer arrival would shake PL

Bruno Guimarães

Manchester United’s interest in Bruno Guimarães is not new, but the situation around the Newcastle United midfielder is starting to evolve ahead of the summer window.

The Brazilian remains one of Newcastle’s most influential players. He played a major role in last season’s Carabao Cup success and continues to dictate tempo in the 2025-26 campaign.

His numbers support that status. According to FBref, Guimarães ranks among Newcastle’s top players for progressive passes, passes into the final third and ball recoveries. He offers a mix of defensive intensity and control in possession, which explains why top clubs continue to track him. Even so, his future is still open.

Guimarães has already decided he will not engage in serious talks until after the 2026 World Cup. His contract runs until June 2028, with a potential extension to 2029 requiring agreement from both sides. Newcastle have approached his camp to discuss a renewal, but those conversations are on hold.

At the same time, the club have a clear stance on any potential transfer. Newcastle would be more open to negotiating with clubs outside England, such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Barcelona.

However, they are expected to take a much firmer position if a Premier League rival makes a move. That context is important given the latest developments.

Manchester United interest becoming more concrete

Manchester United have been linked with Bruno Guimarães for months, but the situation now appears more defined.

Information from ESPN Brazil indicates that Newcastle would demand between €75m and €80m (£65m-£69m) to consider a sale. That figure aligns with the proposal Barcelona made in 2023-24, which the player turned down in order to stay at St James’ Park.

There is still no formal offer from Old Trafford. In addition, Guimarães is part of a broader shortlist, meaning United are not solely focused on him.

However, a new internal factor has now emerged.

Casemiro pushing move behind the scenes

Casemiro, who is expected to leave Manchester United, has been actively backing a move for his Brazil teammate.

He has reportedly recommended Bruno Guimarães as his ideal successor in midfield. His voice carries weight inside the club, both because of his experience and his standing within the dressing room.

That support changes the dynamic of the situation. United’s interest is no longer limited to recruitment planning. It now has backing from within the squad itself.

Now the Red Devils are pushing for Champions League qualification, while Newcastle could miss out on European football this season.

For now, Guimarães remains calm and focused on his recovery and the World Cup. He is not pushing for a move, and his relationship with Newcastle remains strong.

Even so, with a clear valuation, internal pressure at Manchester United and Newcastle’s reluctance to strengthen domestic rivals, this is a situation that could become far more complex once the summer arrives.

Our take: not a natural replacement

Bruno Guimarães would be an outstanding addition to an already strong Manchester United squad. He brings control, tempo and progression, all of which would elevate the team’s midfield. However, he is not a like-for-like replacement for Casemiro.

The two operate in very different ways. Casemiro is primarily a defensive midfielder. His game is built on positioning, duels, interceptions and shielding the back line. He anchors the structure.

Guimarães, on the other hand, plays with more freedom. He contributes defensively, but his main impact comes in possession. He progresses the ball, links phases and dictates rhythm.

In that sense, the profiles are almost complementary rather than similar.

Manchester United would undoubtedly improve by signing Guimarães. Still, replacing Casemiro with him would likely require a tactical adjustment or an additional midfielder to balance the system.

He is an upgrade in some aspects, but not a direct replacement.
