‘They need surgery’: Tim Sherwood identifies two Premier League midfielders who would transform Man Utd

Tim Sherwood is convinced that Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is one of the missing puzzle pieces that Manchester United require for a Premier League title challenge.

Adam Wharton has been heavily linked with Manchester United in recent months amid the Red Devils’ pursuit of a new midfielder in the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old Crystal Palace star is under contract at Selhurst Park until 2029 and Wharton has been tipped to leave the Eagles after the 2026 World Cup tournament.

However, the Eagles are keen to recoup as much of a transfer fee as possible for United-linked Wharton, who has had a reported £70m price tag placed on him.

Tim Sherwood says an Adam Wharton signing for Man Utd would be as important as an Elliot Anderson acquisition in the summer

Manchester United will lose Casemiro in the summer and the Red Devils’ midfield options will be paper-thin after the end of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Kobbie Mainoo has enjoyed an Old Trafford resurgence under Michael Carrick in recent months, but a midfielder is believed to be a top target for Man Utd.

Crystal Palace and England star Adam Wharton is only one of two names on the Red Devils’ radar, with United believed to be interested in midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Speaking to Sam Allardyce, Tim Sherwood argued that Wharton and Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson could help fire United to the Premier League title.

“He won’t be at Nottingham Forest next season, Elliot Anderson,” he said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.

“Unfortunately for Forest, he won’t be. I think he will be at Man United.

“I can see Adam Wharton at Man United as well. I think they take them both. They need surgery if they want to win the Premier League.”

Elliot Anderson’s situation with Nottingham Forest could open the perfect transfer opportunity for Man Utd to pounce on

United are not alone in their interest in Elliot Anderson, with Manchester City and Liverpool also linked with the talented Nottingham Forest and England midfielder.

Anderson is under contract with Forest until 2029, but Vitor Pereira’s men are fighting for Premier League safety in their final eight league matches this season.

Forest have reportedly slapped a hefty £80m price tag on Anderson amid the interest from Premier League sides United, Manchester City and Liverpool.

However, the Premier League club could struggle to keep hold of the 23-year-old England international if Forest are relegated to the Championship for next season.
