Garner gets first England call-up

James Garner has been included in the senior England setup for the first time after Thomas Tuchel named an expanded 35-man squad for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

The German has billed the expanded selection as a final opportunity for players to stake their claim for a place in the team he takes to the World Cup in North America this summer.

Garner, who was part of the England Under-21 squad that won the European Championships in 2023, has been backed by Everton boss David Moyes for recognition at international level and Tuchel explained that he basically been impressed by the midfielder's performances this season.

"A bit of an underrated player," the German said. "He plays several positions. I've been impressed, watching him live, by his work rate and physicality. He is a fantastic team-mate and does a lot to help those around him."

For his part, Garner said he was "really happy.

"I was very confident it was going to come just on the basis that I've had a good season, so I finally got my chance and it's a dream come true."

The 24-year-old faces stiff competition with his favoured position being in an area of that pitch where England are well-stocked but his versatility could help his cause.
