Dominic Calvert-Lewin has a ‘real chance’ of earning a first England cap for nearly five years when the Three Lions face Uruguay on March 27
The Leeds United striker was a surprise inclusion in a large, 35-strong group for what is the last international get together before Thomas Tuchel names his final squad for the World Cup in North America.
Calvert-Lewin and Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke are both included and with Ollie Watkins omitted and Harry Kane one of 11 players allowed to join up with the squad later in the training camp, the pair both have a last-ditch chance to impress the head coach.
Tuchel pointed to their height and ability from the penalty spot as reasons for inclusion. He said: “I think they're a bit the same profile. Harry Kane is not in camp in the beginning, so I want to see them both. I want to know more about Dom Solanke, who was with us once, but then a long time injured.
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin has had a good season with Leeds and is very decisive. Both are good penalty takers, by the way, so I want to see what they're capable of.
“I want to see if they can if they can fill the gap, what they can bring, what they can offer with set pieces, of course with their strengths and their body and the height that they bring.
“So I want to learn about them and let's see, like I said, the competition is on. They will compete now for minutes against Uruguay. They have a real chance to get minutes against Uruguay.
“They were of course excited about the call up. They understand the situation, and I think that helps to be clear what the situation is in which they come. They have a real chance to get an England cap, to get minutes, and of course they're excited for it.”
That match takes place at Wembley, and will pit Tuchel up against former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa. Four days later they face Japan, by which time Kane could be included.
Calvert-Lewin has scored just once in the last nine games but had a really positive spell earlier in the season. He actually missed his last penalty, in the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, although he has scored ten and missed only two in his career.
