Former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has recently opened up about his tenure at Elland Road.

Whilst Daniel Farke is currently a beloved figure in West Yorkshire at this moment in time, the same cannot be said for Marsch, who rubbed certain sections of the fanbase the wrong way the moment he took over following Marcelo Bielsa’s dismissal.

The American recently shared his thoughts on the 49ers as well as how Farke is doing in the role he once held.

However, in the same interview with GiveMeSport, Marsch made a sensational claim regarding Leeds that is certain to annoy some members of the Elland Road faithful.

Jesse Marsch claims he would’ve kept Leeds up in 2023

After surviving by the skin of their teeth in the 2021/22 campaign on the final day, with Marsch keeping United in the top flight, his full season in charge at Leeds did not go to plan.

Marsch was sacked in February 2023, with Leeds sitting 17th in the table, above the relegation zone on goal difference and on a run of seven games without a win.

When reflecting on being sacked, Marsch said: “I enjoyed the experience, and I was disappointed to be let go, and I still believe that if they kept me there, we would have stayed in the league, but that’s for the history books, and I took that experience with me and moved on, and now I’m ready for my next challenges.”

Whilst Javi Gracia and then later on Sam Allardyce were unable to prevent Leeds from going down that season, fans will laugh at the suggestion that the man who got them into that precarious position in the first place was the one to get them out of it.

Data suggests Daniel Farke’s Leeds side is vastly superior to Jesse Marsch’s side

Whilst in fairness to Marsch, he was not in charge for the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign as Leeds were relegated, he was in charge for the bulk of it.

When Leeds were relegated in 2023, they finished 19th on 31 points

Already this season, the Whites have accumulated more points under Farke with 32, with eight games still to play (Sofascore)

Even if the worst comes to the worst and Leeds do go down this season, they can at least say they went down fighting and giving their all, unlike the 2023 side, who finished five points from safety whilst conceding a whopping 78 goals.

Leeds have been exceptional this season up to this point, and hopefully, Farke can guide them through these last eight games and pick up enough points to ensure they avoid the drop.
