Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing new contracts with Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire. The future of both players has been the subject of intense speculation over the last few months, with a fresh update emerging about the duo.
According to a report in The Athletic, Mainoo and Maguire are close to putting pen to paper on fresh terms to extend their deals at Old Trafford.
Mainoo’s current contract is currently scheduled to run until the summer of 2027, with United also having the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.
Maguire’s contract runs out at the end of the season, meaning there have been fears that the experienced defender could leave the Reds as a free agent in the summer.
United, though, are reportedly close to reaching an agreement to extend the contracts of both players, which would see the duo commit their respective futures to the club.
It has been reported that Mainoo’s new deal would keep him at United until the summer of 2031 and would see the midfielder handed a “significant” salary increase.
Maguire’s new deal would reportedly be a one-year extension with the option of a further 12 months, meaning he could be a United player until 2028 if the extra year is activated.
Michael Carrick has been full of praise for both players during his time as United’s interim head coach, recently explaining why he believes the best is yet to come for Mainoo.
“He [Mainoo] can always improve on a lot of things, that’s the age he's at just for starters," Carrick said. "There's so much more to come and develop and that's just natural, that's not a negative on Kobbie, that just the stage he's in in his career, so hopefully he has got a lot layers to improve and keep developing on that.
"I think he's done really well. Not having a lot of football for a period of time to come in and play a run of games and find your rhythm. I think he did that really quickly and there's a natural kind of flow really and I thought he was really good again on the weekend.
"Putting in a performance where he did a little bit of everything and controlled the game and spells when he had to defend and it was really impressive."
