Man Utd'close'to double breakthrough, claims David Ornstein

Manchester United are close to agreeing new contracts with both Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire.

It comes after Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire were both recalled into the England squad for the upcoming March friendlies.

David Ornstein reports via The Athletic that negotiations are ‘advanced’ and United are ‘close’ to securing an agreement for both players.

Mainoo and Maguire have both been pivotal under Michael Carrick, leading a resurgent United to third place in the Premier League table.

What is YOUR reaction to Kobbie Mainoo’s recall for England?

What is Ruben Amorim thinking right now?!

Kobbie Mainoo and Maguire contract situations

Kobbie Mainoo signed his current contract with Manchester United in 2023, after he made his debut in the first team.

United discussed a new deal in 2024 after he established himself as a key player for the club and won the FA Cup, but no agreement was reached.

And under Ruben Amorim’s management there was genuine concern Mainoo’s future may lie away from United. He wanted to leave the club on loan last summer.

Amorim’s sacking has given Mainoo a new lease of life at the club. He has started every single game under Carrick.

Mainoo’s current deal runs to 2027, with an option to extend to 2028.

It is imperative United get a deal agreed as soon as possible and it would be ideal to do so before the World Cup.

This latest report is very encouraging, and it would be important for new signings to know that Mainoo’s future is also locked down long-term.

How worried are you about Kobbie Mainoo not yet signing a new contract?

Maguire is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and entering the year there were questions over his future.

Over the past few weeks he has proven to be an integral part of the squad, due to ongoing injury problems for Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

Maguire has performed at a high level for United and it is not a surprise to see him back in the England squad.

While he would have to take a reduction in salary to re-sign with United, it makes sense for him to sign a deal for the next couple of seasons at least, to provide some stability and experience.

It appears United are making good progress with Maguire and Mainoo, and hopefully this can be tied up as soon as possible.

Should Harry Maguire get a contract extension beyond the 2025/26 season?
