Gary Lineker claims Liverpool have one of the three best players in the Premier League right now

Gary Lineker says that only two more Premier League players have been as good as versatile Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai this season.

Three years on from his move to Anfield, Jurgen Klopp’s prediction for Szoboszlai has come true.

Multiple pundits have called the Hungarian Liverpool’s best player this season, including Steven Gerrard, and Lineker has now ranked him among the top three players in the Premier League along with Declan Rice and Bruno Fernandes.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Declan Rice and Bruno Fernandes named best in Premier League

Speaking on The Rest Is Football alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards this week, the former England international was discussing the best players in the division so far this term.

He did mention Arsenal centre-back Gabriel, but decided that Szoboszlai, Rice and Fernandes were the best three in the campaign so far.

Lineker said: “I was going to say we talked about players of the season. I think my top three at present, and it’s still early, still early, would be in no particular order. Bruno, Declan, and Szoboszlai, I would say.

“I mean, I never include defenders on this. But Gabriel I would put in there as well.”

Arne Slot says what position he actually wants Dominik Szoboszlai to play

Interestingly, Lineker’s top three players this season are all natural midfielders.

But thanks to injuries to the likes of Joe Gomez and Jeremie Frimpong, the 25-year-old has often been used at right-back this term.

That may need to be the case against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday as well, with Slot confirming in his live pre-match press conference on Friday that Gomez can’t start the game.

But when speaking about Szoboszlai to the media, he said he views the former Leipzig talent as a midfielder.

Slot stated: “Dominik for me is a midfielder. When I play him in a different position, it is not because I think I want to be a tactical genius, it is that I don’t have other options and want to pick the best player available.”
