Ex-Sunderland midfielder among favourites for big Scottish Premiership job

A former Sunderland star is on the shortlist to take a job in the Scottish Premiership.

Former Sunderland midfielder Carl Robinson could be set to land himself a new managerial role.

The 49-year-old - who played 57 times for the Black Cats between 2004 and 2006, and also picked up 52 caps for Wales - has been without a managerial job since leaving Western Sydney Wanderers in 2022, but does currently serve as an assistant coach at MLS side Atlanta United. Robinson also works for the Welsh FA in coach education, and is eager to get himself back into the hot seat as soon as possible.

Carl Robinson high on St Mirren shortlist

Robinson might well land himself the role he craves soon enough. According to the Scottish Sun, the ex-midfielder - who scored five goals as a Black Cats player - is among the favourites to take up the vacant role at Scottish Premiership side St Mirren.

The Buddies were forced to seek out new options after Stephen Robinson departed for Aberdeen earlier this month. It’s been a tough league season for St Mirren, who are 10th in the table with just 24 points from 30 games. However, Livingston are stranded at the bottom with only 15 points and one win to their name, so the chances of relegation are extremely slim.

What’s more, there’s also the small matter of St Mirren winning the Scottish League Cup for just the second time in their history this season, beating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden Park in December. While high up on the list, Robinson is just one of several potential candidates to take the reins at the SMISA Stadium.

Alongside Robinson, the Scottish Sun has named Neil Lennon, Simo Valakari, Gary Naismith and Mark Wilson on St Mirren’s shortlist, as well as former Dundee coach Tony Docherty.

St Mirren still have plenty to play for as they take on Falkirk (away), Aberdeen (home) and Celtic (away) before the Scottish Premiership split. They also face the latter in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 18th April, meaning Robinson could lead the Buddies to further glory if he gets the job.
