David Moyes says Everton have a "clever" academy graduate who has surprised him

David Moyes has now piled the praise on Everton academy graduate Harrison Armstrong.

The 19-year-old has managed to establish himself at the Hill Dickinson Stadium this season following loan moves to Derby and Preston, making six starts in the Premier League.

Harrison Armstrong has been named in the starting XI a lot less since Idrissa Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye returned from winning the Africa Cup of Nations – which has since been stripped from them – but David Moyes remains a huge admirer of the teenager, mainly for how well he takes on instructions.

David Moyes praises Harrison Armstrong for being a quick learner

When speaking to Men in Blazers about a range of topics at Everton – including a change to training – the Glaswegian hailed the Everton academy product for his intelligence and ability to adapt to different positions.

Moyes said: “Harrison’s developed brilliantly well. I know we’ve had to put him a little bit out of position at different times in recent weeks, but… he’s a clever boy for his age. He’s one of the boys who can pick up more – quite a lot more – than I would expect from young boys.”

A lot of young players have immense talent on the ball like Armstrong, but what typically gets them in the starting XI at the highest level is what they do out of possession, and how well they can follow a game plan.

The boy from West Derby is clearly doing that side of the game to an impressive level to win over a manager as experienced as Moyes, who is notably leaving the £40m man Tyler Dibling and a £17.3m signing in Merlin Rohl out in favour of using Armstrong.

Hopefully, the England U19 international can nail down a consistent position at Everton, or else he may become a victim of his own versatility and live a career as a utility player.
