Premier League release statement as Bournemouth score seconds after Man Utd are denied penalty

In the Friday night Premier League fixture, Manchester United travelled away to Bournemouth.

Michael Carrick has had a great start to life as interim boss at Old Trafford with just one defeat so far. As a result, the Red Devils came into the game in third place, three points above Aston Villa, having beaten the Villans 3-1 last time out. Bournemouth aren't flying quite so high, having drawn their last four matches on the bounce. The Cherries started the night in 10th place, on 41 points, as they aim to sneak into a European spot before the end of the season.

While the first half was entertaining enough, it flew past without either team being able to get on the scoresheet. After the break, though, Bruno Fernandes was able to put Man Utd in front from the penalty spot after Matheus Cunha's shirt was clearly pulled back.

There was then further controversy when Amad Diallo went down in the box, but no penalty was given. Just moments later, the Cherries then went up the other end and found the back of the net through Ryan Christie.

Amad Diallo Denied Penalty vs Bournemouth

Footage of the incident showed Adrien Truffert pushing Diallo to the ground as the winger looked to cut in on his left foot. The on-field decision from the referee, however, was no penalty.

Just a matter of seconds later, Christie raced up the field and showed great composure to make it 1-1. VAR checked to see if it should call play back for a possible penalty, but evidently felt as though no major mistake had been made by the referee, so the goal stood.

The official Premier League Match Centre then released a statement explaining why the penalty was not given:

"The referee’s call of no penalty for a challenge by Truffert was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed the contact was not sufficient for a foul."

Adding to the drama, Man United then took the lead again with Bournemouth's James Hill scoring an own goal only four minutes later. As if that wasn't enough, Harry Maguire was then given a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, with Eli Junior Kroupi making it 2-2 from the penalty spot.
