Cherries twice come from behind to extend unbeaten run in entertaining United draw

It was an action-packed first half without the opening goal, but the game exploded into life in the second period.

United were awarded a penalty as Alex Jimenez pulled back Matheus Cunha as he went into the box, which Bruno Fernandes duly converted with 61 minutes on the clock.

Ryan Christie drew Bournemouth level six minutes later but the Cherries weren’t level for long as a corner went in off James Hill for an own goal.

The hosts were awarded a spot kick of their own as Evanilson was hauled down by Harry Maguire, who was sent off for the challenge, and Junior Kroupi smashed the penalty home.

Bournemouth sought a winner against their ten-man opponents, but they couldn’t find the winner and their unbeaten run extended to 11 games.

Kroupi and Adam Smith both dropped to the bench in two Cherries changes from their draw with Burnley, as Amine Adli and Jimenez came into the starting XI.

The visitors saw a good amount of the ball in the opening stages but Bournemouth were aggressive in their press and threatened on transition.

The first chance of the game went the way of United as Amad Diallo tested Djordje Petrovic from the edge of the box, but the Cherries created a superb chance on the counterattack after the Serbian’s save.

Marcus Tavernier fed Rayan who outpaced Luke Shaw into the box and the Brazilian took aim at the far post and the arriving Evanilson, but it missed both the bottom corner and his compatriot.

Petrovic was then called upon again to save well with a strong hand at his near post from a Matheus Cunha effort.

The Serbian was busy as Bruno Fernandes fired towards goal from the top of the D, and he saved down to his left and gathered at the second attempt.

Both sides looked threatening on the counterattack and United were the next to go from back to front, but Tavernier was back to block Fernandes’ glanced effort.

Petrovic palmed a corner away before James Hill headed Brian Mbeumo’s shot clear after United recycled possession.

Rayan powered a shot towards goal that Senne Lammens had to be alert to save low at his near post.

Adrien Truffert made an excellent block in the Cherries box from an Amad shot, before Petrovic again made an excellent save and he denied Fernandes with his legs after the United skipper was found free at the far post.

Lammens caught a powerful Truffert effort as the chances continued to come at both ends, before Tavernier curled a free kick around the visitors’ wall but the Belgian keeper caught well.

The second half started as the first had been, with United coming forward early on and the Cherries hitting them on the counterattack, but Ryan Christie’s effort with the outside of his boot went over the bar.

Both sides showed plenty of endeavour but with few clear-cut chances, until the visitors took the lead on the hour mark.

Jimenez grabbed Cunha’s shirt as he cut inside him in the box and the Brazilian went down, with referee Stuart Attwell pointing to the spot with no hesitation.

Fernandes then cooly converted the penalty as he sent Petrovic the wrong way to give United the advantage.

But the Cherries hit back six minutes later.

Amad was denied a penalty after going down under a Truffert challenge, and Bournemouth went up the other end, the left back teed up Christie and he finished well into the bottom corner with his right.

But no sooner had the Cherries drawn themselves level, they were behind again.

Fernandes delivered a corner from the Cherries right, Marcos Senesi couldn’t get enough height on his jump and the ball flicked his head before going in off Hill for an own goal.

After the goal, Andoni Iraola made three changes, introducing Kroupi, Adam Smith and David Brooks for Christie, Jimenez and Adli.

Bournemouth certainly didn’t lie down and drew themselves level once again with nine minutes left to play.

Evanilson was slid in brilliantly by Kroupi, and Maguire pulled him down. Referee Attwell again pointed to the spot and brandished the red card to give the Englishman his marching orders.

Kroupi duly thumped home the spot kick, and the Cherries now smelt blood against their ten-man visitors.

Ben Gannon-Doak made his return from injury for the final four minutes as he replaced Rayan, before Brooks tested Lammens at his near post but the Belgian caught well.

The Cherries weren’t able to fashion a final chance in nine added minutes as they drew their fifth game in a row to take their unbeaten run to 11 – although they will be much happier with this point than the previous four.
