Worse than Maguire: Carrick must axe Man Utd dud who lost possession 13x v Bournemouth - opinion

Manchester United failed to win under Michael Carrick for just the third time last night, as his side could only manage a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

The Red Devils twice led during the Premier League meeting on the South Coast, with Bruno Fernandes and an own goal from James Hill looking set to secure another three points.

However, Eli Kroupi Junior’s penalty in the 81st minute was enough to secure a point for the Cherries and frustrate Carrick in the tenth game of his temporary reign.

The point moved the Red Devils four points clear of Aston Villa in fourth place, ensuring that the side remains in third position ahead of the upcoming international break.

Despite the point, it was a night to forget for one player, who struggled to deliver his best performance against the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium.

The stats behind Harry Maguire’s display against Bournemouth

Before a ball was kicked on Friday night, it was shaping to be an excellent day for United centre-back Harry Maguire, with numerous pieces of good news coming out throughout the day.

The 33-year-old was named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the latest international break, with news also emerging about a new contract until the summer of 2027.

However, his performance against Bournemouth was certainly one to forget, as the defender was handed a red card after being adjudged to have dragged down Evanilson in the penalty area.

His underlying stats before his dismissal were just as disappointing, with Maguire failing to make any tackles, whilst also being dribbled past on two occasions.

The defender also managed to find a teammate with 73% of the passes he attempted, subsequently gifting possession back to the hosts on eight separate occasions.

The United star who was worse than Maguire v Bournemouth

Despite coming perilously close to yet another victory under Carrick’s guidance, numerous players alongside Maguire failed to deliver during the clash against Bournemouth.

Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo also fell way below the standards he’s set for himself in recent months after his return to senior action after Carrick’s appointment on a temporary basis.

The Englishman lost 100% of the aerial battles he entered, whilst also failing to win any of the tackles he contested - subsequently being dominated by the opposition.

With the ball at his feet, the 20-year-old was just as disappointing, losing the ball on 100% of the times he tried to take it past his opponent, whilst making just two passes into the final third.

However, striker Bryan Mbeumo was once again a source of disappointment for the Red Devils, with the Cameroonian struggling to adapt to the demands of playing as a central striker.

He’s been forced to operate in such a role with Amad Diallo, the man currently preferred by Carrick to start off the right-hand of the Red Devils’ frontline.

For the sixth game in a row, the 26-year-old failed to get himself on the scoresheet, with his continued selection one that could start to baffle the fanbase in the weeks ahead.

His underlying stats from the clash against Andoni Iraola’s side further demonstrate his struggles, with the manager desperately needing to drop him from his starting eleven.

Mbeumo only managed to register a solitary shot on goal, but it didn’t trouble opposition ‘keeper Djordje Petrovic - who only had three saves to make all night.

The Cameroonian international also only managed to complete 59% of the passes he attempted, subsequently gifting possession back to the opposition on 13 occasions.

He also only managed to register touches in the opposition box, whilst failing to create any chances for his teammates - further showcasing his struggle within attacking areas.

After such a showing, coupled with Benjamin Sesko’s recent goalscoring exploits, Carrick desperately needs to drop the summer addition after the international break.

It’s becoming more evident week after week that he’s not the player required to lead the line, especially if the club are to secure Champions League football.

Maguire certainly failed to catch the eye for the right reasons, but Mbeumo was arguably a bigger disappointment during the stalemate on the South Coast.
