'Baffling','Soft'- Mark Clattenburg comments on Man Utd VAR controversy vs Bournemouth

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg clears up whether or not Manchester United should have had a second penalty in their draw with Bournemouth.

Bruno Fernandes fired Manchester United ahead at the Vitality Stadium from the penalty spot, and the Red Devils thought they earned a second spot kick when Amad Diallo went to ground in the 66th minute.

However, referee Stuart Attwell waved play on and Ryan Christie went up the other end and equalised for Bournemouth. VAR checked the incident but decided not to intervene and awarded the on-pitch decision of a goal.

Minutes later, Bournemouth were awarded a penalty of their own that was converted by Eli Junior Kroupi to leave United with a 2-2 draw.

United in Focus have spoken exclusively with Mark Clattenburg on the decision to deny United a second penalty, leading directly to Bournemouth’s equaliser.

“Manchester United wanted a penalty when Amad Diallo went down from contact with a Bournemouth defender inside the penalty area,” Clattenburg said.

“The referee and VAR agreed that any contact was slight and not consistent with his fall. After this challenge, Bournemouth went up the other end and scored.

Michael Carrick questions ‘baffling’ penalty decision against Man Utd

While Clattenburg agreed with the decision made by Attwell and VAR, United interim head coach Michael Carrick certainly didn’t.

Speaking post-match to Sky Sports, Carrick questioned why United were awarded one foul on Matheus Cunha but denied a very similar appeal for Amad.

“We should have had another penalty. Obviously, if you get one, you must get the other,” Carrick said.

“It’s pretty much identical for me, two-hand grab. Either way, he’s got one wrong, but to give one and not give the other, I can’t get my head around it. I think it’s crazy.

“It’s a bit baffling, really. Because of that, they score and then it’s chaos after that, really.

“We should have had another penalty and the game would have been totally different.”
