Michael Carrick’s Amad decision after Maguire’s red card was genius, it’s going completely unnoticed

The referee was the “star” of the show as Man Utd lamented two missed points against Bournemouth, but Michael Carrick’s stock should rise.

For the first time under his management, Man Utd went down to ten men after Harry Maguire was sent off in the 81st minute.

Combined with an added time of nine minutes, it was clear that Michael Carrick faced a real challenge to take one point away from the South Coast.

He took an unpopular Amad decision in the immediate aftermath of the red card, but it was completely justified even though it didn’t pay immediate dividends.

Michael Carrick’s Amad decision vs Bournemouth

Carrick has made a conscious effort in recent games to make Amad feel involved and valued, as his end product has gone missing.

Frustration is palpable in his actions on the pitch, and it wouldn’t be helped by the referee waving off a stonewall penalty against him.

Despite the frustrations, Amad never stops running and trying things, and that was reflected in Carrick’s decision after Maguire’s red card.

Going down to ten men, the Man Utd manager had a decision to make because a CB needed to come in place of an attacker.

Benjamin Sesko had already replaced Bryan Mbeumo, and Bruno Fernandes is untouchable, which meant one of Matheus Cunha or Amad would come off.

Cunha had won the penalty for United’s opener and looked threatening, but Carrick kept Amad and subbed off the Brazilian.

United didn’t really create much afterwards, and a draw is a good result considering the game situation, but Carrick can’t be criticised for this decision because it was justified.

Carrick’s preference for Amad had a genius reason

Amad and Cunha are on different ends of the form spectrum right now, but the game state against Bournemouth needed the former more than the latter.

Down to ten men, United needed a direct running outlet who was also grounded out of possession.

Amad, as the single outlet, was a better choice in terms of pure pace and dribbling, while Cunha’s tricky antics are better when a game needs to be seen off for three points.

Against Bournemouth, Carrick prepared United for a backs-to-the-wall siege defence after the red card, so having two direct runners in Sesko and Amad, with Fernandes behind them, was the perfect setup.

It was a genius move that isn’t getting enough credit because the final scoreline isn’t impacted by it.

Had one ball in behind from Fernandes reached Amad or Sesko late on to result in a 3-2 win, Carrick would be hailed as a mastermind.

The important thing is that he’s following the process perfectly, because in the long term, a good process always ends up matching the results.
