Regis Le Bris hints at Sunderland's Newcastle plan after very recent success

Sunderland's approach at Elland Road last month wasn't pretty but it was effective. The Black Cats had less than 30% possession, just eight touches in the Leeds box and one shot on target - Habib Diarra's penalty.

But that was enough for Sunderland to pick up all three points, a victory that carried them to the 40-point mark for the season.

Leeds pressed high and aggressively - as Newcastle will tomorrow - but organised Sunderland stood firm, and defended heroically in the final stages when the hosts desperately pushed for a leveller.

"We were brave and we were really intense collectively," said Le Bris.

"It was tough for us as well because Leeds pressed high as well and we didn't have a good control in this game.

"But we learned from it. It was the first game for Melker [Ellborg], for example, Granit didn't start ,they are really important in the build-up so we might improve this part, I think."

At St James' Park, Newcastle often benefit from chaos. The Magpies are at their best when they're playing at 100mph, but Le Bris doesn't want his side to play Newcastle's game.

He said: "We have to be proactive, we want to show our qualities, we want to be intense with our way of playing. And after that, it will be a question of key moments.

"We'll have to manage the momentum because those games are always really intense.

"It might be a basketball game sometimes. Do we want to do that or not? It's up to us to decide sometimes."

Sunderland under Le Bris have risen to the big occasions. They came through the Championship play-offs last season in the most dramatic fashion and held their nerve to beat their fiercest rivals in the first derby of the season back in December.

The build-up to that encounter, the game itself and the celebrations that followed all served to show Sunderland's players just how much the derby means.

"They know and they are really looking forward to it, because we want to play in those games with big expectations," said Le Bris,

"It's a big opportunity, it's a big event for sure and the players are excited and they want to do it together."
