Fewer touches than Lammens: Carrick must axe Man Utd star who won 0 tackles vs Bournemouth -…

Manchester United drew to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium but it was a result marred by controversy.

Having improved under Michael Carrick, the Red Devils had the chance to consolidate third place in the Premier League, but Harry Maguire’s contentious red card allowed Junior Kroupi to make it 2-2.

There’s no question that this is a team displaying more character and purpose, and Carrick may well secure a place in next year’s Champions League to strengthen his claim to the permanent position that will be determined this summer.

Bruno Fernandes was once again the talisman, but it proved a testing match with several performances that left something to be desired.

How Man United played vs Bournemouth

Carrick and his Manchester United players would have left the pitch with a sense of grievance after Amad Diallo wasn’t awarded a penalty.

The frustration was accentuated by Kroupi’s spot kick, but this was a deeper illustration of the gains made since Ruben Amorim was sacked in January.

Even so, INEOS will know where they need to strengthen. Diallo cut an annoyed figure at full-time, but he struggled to play his best football throughout the contest.

Amad Diallo for Man United

Twice United let a lead slip, but there’s a sense that a previous version of this team might not have held their nerve. However, it is indeed clear that a few changes are needed, with one player sticking out in particular.

Carrick must instantly drop Man United star

Maguire's joy was short-lived when he put Manchester United back in front from a corner (it ended up being a James Hill own goal), with the centre-back sent off in a game-changing moment, but the England international, who was jubilant after his recall to Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions squad, will be frustrated with the officiating and perhaps some of his teammates too.

For example, Diogo Dalot flattered to deceive in his defensive contribution.

Dalot struggled, unable to even attempt a dribble, make a tackle or create a chance, shakily conceding several chances too. He also lost four of five contested ground duels, having even registered fewer touches than teammate Senne Lammens in the sticks (50 v 54).

While he offered creative support, ending the match having made three key passes, the Portugal international is hardly secure in his position on the right flank, and fans will be hoping to see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, who missed out on the south coast due to illness.

A key pass is a pass that directly leads to a shot at the opponent's goal.

Man United are approaching a critical point in their season, with several crucial Premier League fixtures up ahead. While Carrick's side have put themselves into a good position, they will need to return to winning ways, now with four points from nine available.

In that, Dalot must showcase more quality, consistency and experience. At the Vitality, the 27-year-old made his 241st appearance for the Red Devils, and given that United have been dealt a decent hand across the business weeks of the campaign, they must ensure they cross the finish line in amongst the top five.

Dalot is going to play his part, but he must be dropped for the upcoming clash against rivals Leeds United. Carrick and his squad will have plenty of time to prepare, with the March international break around the corner, but given that they are out of both domestic cup competitions and did not earn a ticket into Europe, there's substance to the claim that Dalot should be dropped.

A more balanced and purposeful ensemble to complement Fernandes could make the difference in the fight to start succeeding once again in the Premier League.
