‘No longer valid’ - Fabrizio Romano drops Bruno Guimaraes transfer update as Man Utd circle for …

Newcastle United latest news: Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Bruno Guimaraes has been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent days.

The Brazilian is currently out injured, but is expected to return to action following the international break. However, Newcastle United’s exit from the Champions League this week sparked stories of a potential move away from the club for some of their key players.

Guimaraes, who is into his second season as the club’s captain, was one of those to be linked with a move away from St James’ Park. On Thursday morning, a bombshell report from Reuters claimed Man United were in advanced talks to sign Guimaraes for £69million. The report credited its source as one ‌’close to the negotiations’.

Manchester United are far from the only club to have been linked with a move for Guimaraes during his time on Tyneside, though, with Real Madrid also credited with an interest in the midfielder during his first few months at the club. Manchester City have also been long-term admirers of Guimaraes, with Pep Guardiola revealing he was a big fan of the midfielder ahead of the first of three trips to St James’ Park for the Citizens back in November.

“It’s not just this season, for many years, since Lyon we realised he was a special player,” Guardiola said. “Newcastle make an incredible signing.

“He’s getting better and better. Always I’ve been a big fan of him.”

Speculation linking Guimaraes with a move to the Etihad Stadium was most prevalent back in 2024 when a release clause in his contract could have been triggered by any clubs. At the time, the Magpies had just failed to qualify for the Champions League and that release clause left them unable to resist bids for Guimaraes if triggered.

However, no such bid was forthcoming and he remained on Tyneside. This summer, Guimaraes’ future will undoubtedly make headlines once again but, in an update provided by Fabrizio Romano, there won’t be any talk about a release clause.

‘No release clause is included into Bruno Guimarães deal at Newcastle for this summer.’ Romano wrote on X. ‘£100m clause expired in June 2024, no longer valid. Any deal would take a negotiation with #NUFC amid links of recent days.’

Eddie Howe responds to Bruno Guimaraes transfer talk

Ahead of this weekend’s Tyne-Wear derby, Howe was asked about those reports linking his captain with a move away from the club, he responded: “I don't even know how to respond to that, I don't even think I should because it's a waste of my energy,” Howe said. “Bruno's our captain, he's fully committed, he's injured at the moment, his only focus is coming back to fitness.”

But pressed further in an initially embargoed section of the press conference, Howe added: “No, I'm not going to be [impolite], because I don't think it's the forum to do that in, but for me it's a nonsense story.

“Is it a problem for us [to have big players linked with exits]? I don't necessarily think it's a problem for us, but it's unwanted news, I suppose is the best way to put it,” Howe said. “You don't want your players distracted. I don't know how much they'll absorb that, but for me it's not the time to think about that.

“In the summer you can sort of understand those stories a little bit more, because the transfer window's open. But to say our captain's in discussions with another club, I think is totally disrespectful to Bruno, more than anybody else. He's totally committed here.”
