'Good feel factor': Man Utd icon didn't hesitate when asked if Michael Carrick should be club's permanent manager

Ryan Giggs did not think twice about whether former Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick should be handed the key to the kingdom at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are on the hunt for their seventh permanent head coach in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era after Ruben Amorim was sacked as Red Devils boss.

Michael Carrick made his return to Old Trafford in January and the 44-year-old United legend has been serving as interim head coach in the 2025-26 season.

The former Middlesbrough boss’ appointment will last until the end of the campaign, but Carrick has been tipped as a potential candidate for the permanent role.

Speaking to Gold Star Promotions, Ryan Giggs admitted that he would be a “bit biased” over whether Michael Carrick should be United’s next permanent manager.

However, the 52-year-old United legend insisted that Carrick’s “fantastic” work at Old Trafford since the start of his interim reign is doing all the talking for him.

“Yeah, I mean Michael’s a good friend, so I’m a bit biased, but I think he’s done a fantastic job,” he said.

“Confidence is up and there’s a real good feel factor around the place. And I think he’s improved the players in a short space of time.

“So yeah, I’ve been really impressed and nothing surprises me, obviously know Michael really well as a player and now as a coach. And yeah, I hope he gets the job.”

Ryan Giggs on the momentum boost that Michael Carrick has sparked for Man Utd’s 2025-26 Premier League season

Carrick has overseen seven Premier League wins from 10 matches since he stepped into the Old Trafford hot seat, with United now pushing for a top-four finish.

Giggs claimed that the impact that Carrick has had can be seen in how United fans are remaining open-minded with each Premier League match ahead of them.

“Yeah, I mean, I think Man United fans are now looking forward to every game,” he added.

“And I think, importantly, you know, going from my experience as a player, this time of the season, you want to be going for something.

“And, you know, a few months ago, perhaps that wouldn’t have been the case, but okay, it’s not winning trophies, but he’s going for that Champions League spot because we don’t want another season like this where, you know, we’re not in Europe.

“We want to get back into the Champions League and be playing against the best teams.”

The Red Devils were in action on Friday evening and 10-man United secured a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth in their Premier League match at the Vitality Stadium.
