Juventus Move for Newcastle Midfielder Hinges on Champions League Future: Report

Juventus’ pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will depend heavily on whether the Italian club can secure Champions League qualification for the next season.

According to [Gazzetta dello Sport](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Serie-A/Juventus/05-03-2026/juve-il-mercato-lo-decide-la-champions-tonali-e-bernardo-appesi-al-quarto-posto-gli-scenari.shtml?refresh_ce-cp), Tonali is considered a “dream” summer target, but the financial situation of the club means any move for the Italy international will be directly tied to a top-four finish in Serie A.

“Everyone for the Champions League, the Champions League for everyone,” the report says. “Champions live to listen to the tunes of the great European nights, and Juventus will only be able to afford certain big names with the guarantee of rich UEFA prizes.”

Juventus currently sit outside the top four, sixth with 47 points to Roma’s 51 in fourth, and clinching a place in the next UCL is described by the Italian outlet as something decisive to their transfer strategy come July.

“Finishing fourth or not makes all the difference in the world, especially in the transfer market,” Gazzetta wrote. “At least €60-70 million is at stake. Essential revenue to enter the race for reinforcements that raise the level and don’t just make up the numbers.”

Tonali is explicitly named among their ambitions, along with two upcoming free agents from Man City and Bayern.

“Overtaking fifth-place Como and, more importantly, Roma, currently fourth and four points ahead, means he has a better chance at playing with the big guns,” the report says. ”From the dream Sandro Tonali (Newcastle) to the high-profile free agents Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) and Leon Goretzka (Bayern).”

Surprisingly, Gazzetta added that discussions are already “underway” with all three players, but framed landing Tonali as a luxury acquisition rather than a certainty at this point.

“If they qualify for the Champions League, CEO Damien Comolli will be able to afford at least one luxury gift. Without a fourth-place finish, he’ll be forced to explore less secure avenues,” the report stated.

According to Gazzetta, Tonali would cost Juventus in the €70-75 million range, with bonuses.
