Hurzeler says Welbeck would be a great fit at World Cup - and not just for goals

And not just because of a best-ever 12-goal haul in the Premier League this season.

Welbeck’s double secured a well-deserved 2-1 win for Albion at home to Liverpool.

He had been left off the 35-man list released by England boss Thomas Tuchel ahead of friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

But he looked as good as ever both in front of goal and around the pitch, helping in build-up play and with defensive chores.

Asked if he was unlucky not to be, Albion boss Hurzeler said: “I think it's not on me to judge this decision.

“The only thing I can say is what I said afterwards to Danny Welbeck, ‘Control the controllables’, and that's what he what he did today on the pitch.

“He created his own record by scoring his 12th goal.

“I think the media will go hard on this but beside that for me, even more important for a team, is how he functions as a connecter.

“He's always there to connect to different ages, to connect to different cultures we have in our team.

“To be there as a social leader, and I think if you want to achieve something in a World Cup, that's an attitude that definitely helps.

“We keep pushing him, we keep trying to support him, and then hopefully one day he will get the rewards for all that he's doing on and off the pitch.”

Milos Kerkez brought Liverpool level in the first half but Albion took charge in the second.

They had plenty of chances apart from that turned home by Welbeck after Jack Hinshelwood had met a superb cross whipped in from the left by Yankuba Minteh.

Hurzeler said: “I think we played a really good second half, not the best first half, but a really good second half.

“We played intense, created chances. I saw a team that was connected, that had a really good togetherness, that reacted well to setbacks.

“Overall, I was very pleased with the intensity, with how we created chances, how we scored the goals, and therefore, I'm proud of the boys.”
