Manchester United have been told a key player ‘doesn’t do enough’ for Michael Carrick’s side

Manchester United have been told to replace a key player under Michael Carrick as a two-time Premier League title winner at Old Trafford has his say on the Red Devils star.

United have turned things around massively under Carrick and as their Champions League rivals continue to falter, they look good value for a top four spot come the end of the season. Securing a spot amongst Europe’s elite for next season would, of course, transform the Red Devils’ transfer possibilities over the summer window, with multiple high-profile arrivals expected and the midfield a particular area of focus.

Paul Parker represented United between 1991-1996 and won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup under Sir Alex Ferguson. The former right-back made 105 appearances for the Red Devils and has had his say on the current side under Carrick – and one key player in particular.

Paul Parker tells Man United that captain Bruno Fernandes is a ‘liability’

Parker was speaking via Lucky Rebel and claimed that United captain Bruno Fernandes is a ‘liability’ for the Red Devils as they attempt to rediscover their former glory under Carrick.

The former United defender said: “At this moment in time, Manchester United, a lot of people are so blinkered about Bruno. I think you have to look at the longer game and ask the question; can you go and really compete for a league with someone like Bruno? He’s been giving him that role now where he's further forward, but the problem is that he's a liability unless you make the game perfect for him.

“Because when you haven't got the ball, he just can't get around people. He won't tackle, always chasing back and just the fact of his ill-discipline without the ball. He just wants to chase and chase and chase. He will not stand in a position and believe that's good enough, he thinks he's got to chase everything and be seen chasing.”

United told to replace Fernandes this summer

Parker added that United should be looking to upgrade their squad this summer and could look to replace Fernandes as part of their rebuild, identifying Matheus Cunha as a player who can be shifted across centrally from his current left-wing spot.

Claiming that Cunha could replace captain Fernandes in the XI, Parker added: “I think Cunha would give you more with and without the ball, yes definitely. But people will say look at the goals Bruno’s made this season. At this time, I think you can go and do that, but you'd look at him in the last few games where you're looking for your captain and your so-called ‘playmaker’ to do something for you and he just doesn't do enough.

“You look at the Newcastle game, [Fernandes] giving away the penalty was needless. There was no need for him to be making that challenge, on a player who was looking for it. A player who doesn't necessarily beat people with the ball at his feet in Anthony Gordon. Gordon was looking for a penalty. He tried it again later. Brainless.”
