Liverpool ready to sell 49-goal forward to fund push for Newcastle United star

Newcastle United could lose Anthony Gordon this summer amid interest from Liverpool.

Newcastle United are set to face a serious bid from Liverpool for winger Anthony Gordon this summer, according to reports.

Gordon joined the Magpies from Everton in January 2023 and has since registered 38 goals and 28 assists in 150 appearances across all competitions. This campaign has been particularly fruitful, with the England international registering 16 goals and five assists across all competitions, which includes a phenomenal return of 10 goals and two assists in 12 Champions League appearances.

Naturally, that form has attracted attention from elsewhere in the Premier League, and TEAMtalk has reported that Liverpool remain serious admirers of Gordon who, despite coming through the Everton youth ranks, is a boyhood Red.

Liverpool to sell Cody Gakpo before making Anthony Gordon push?

Liverpool’s signing of Gordon would only come after a couple of major hurdles are navigated.

Firstly, the 25-year-old is under contract at St. James’ Park until 2030 and has no release clause in his deal, meaning Newcastle hold all the cards when it comes to negotiations.

And secondly, Liverpool already have several options on the left side following the emergence of Rio Ngumoha, Florian Wirtz’s ability to play there, and, of course, Cody Gakpo.

The latter is the man who could leave to make room for Gordon, however, with TEAMtalk reporting that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the Netherlands international, as long as they avoid relegation. Further afield, Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig, Napoli and AC Milan are understood to be among the list of potential suitors for Gakpo.

Gakpo joined the Reds in the same window Gordon moved to St. James’ Park and has notched 49 goals and 21 assists in 170 appearances across all competitions so far. However, he’s never quite hit the heights expected of him, often falling in and out of the starting line-up.

Even this season, with increased importance following the departure of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich, Gakpo has managed just eight goals and four assists in 42 appearances, including six goals in 29 Premier League outings as Liverpool struggle to secure Champions League qualification.
