'Another big bang' - Fabian Hurzeler's latest ref rage against Liverpool explained

All the reaction from Brighton’s 2-1 win against Premier League champions Liverpool

'Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler continued his habit of collecting yellow cards during the 2-1 win against Liverpool.

Hurzeler, 33, was booked during the second half of Albion's triumph over Premier League champions Liverpool, his fifth yellow card of the season. This time his offence was waving an imaginary card at the referee in an attempt to get a Liverpool player booked.

Last season he received the joint highest amount of yellow cards among Premier League managers with nine, a total equalled by then Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.

It's an ongoing issue for the young German as he collected seven yellows during a period in charge at Bundesliga2 club St Pauli.

It's an interesting character contrast for the German, who looks squeaky clean and is smart and considered with the media, but clearly has a very prickly persona on the touchline. One that annoys match officials and upsets fellow managers, such as Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola - maybe the latter is no bad thing though!

"Yeah, it's too harsh," said Hurzeler to Sussex World when asked about his latest yellow card against Liverpool.

"For me, I don't want to create another big bang here. I was sitting here a few weeks ago after Arsenal and created a big bang, so now I'm more careful what I say.

"I don't want to be the main topic tomorrow in the media. But it's just... If I see how others behaves and then I behave like this and I immediately get a yellow card, it's just nonsense."

It's one of the very few moments when Hurzeler came across as a youthful manager. When asked what he said to in order to get his fifth booking of the year.

He added: "Nothing, I said nothing. I was asking why in this case we didn't get a yellow card, why the opponent didn't get a yellow card for this foul. That was the only question I made and that was it."

Hurzeler was pressed again, that he waved an imaginary yellow - which is against Premier League rules.

"Maybe it was this case," he said. "But even then, I can say to you, other managers in the league do it as well.

"There is a clear rule, but then you have to do it for everyone."

Brighton are next in action after the international break at Burnley on April 11.

Hurzeler's impressive management has steered them back into European contention... but half an eye will also be on Hurzeler's yellow card counter.
