How Chris Wood performed as Nottingham Forest B-Team beat Newcastle 3-0

It’s been a long time coming, but Chris Wood has finally donned the famous Nottingham Forest jersey following his injury nightmare.

Wood was a surprise inclusion on the Forest team sheet as the Reds took on Newcastle at Loughborough University in their latest Premier League 2 outing.

The striker has not played for Forest since a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in October, which signalled the end of Ange Postecoglou as the club’s head coach following just 39 days in charge.

Now, he looks to be in the final stages of his recovery and on Friday night, he was back on the pitch to face his former club, Newcastle United.

Chris Wood scores for B-Team vs Newcastle

It took Wood just 11 minutes to announce his return to action as he headed home from inside the six-yard box to give Forest the perfect start.

It offered Forest fans a brilliant reminder of his quality inside the penalty area, and ultimately, Wood’s presence back in the senior ranks really can’t come soon enough.

Wood’s overall play on the night was largely impressive as he held the ball up pretty well and looked to have maintained his fitness during his time in the treatment room.

Wood didn’t really show too many signs of being rusty or out of practice, and quite clearly it was planned that he would play for 45 minutes, with the striker heading off at half-time.

With a three-week break after today’s game with Tottenham, it’s a big positive that Wood has returned to action and got some minutes under his belt.

Wood could return for Aston Villa clash

Forest return to action with a trip to Porto, and Wood is registered in the squad for that competition if Vitor Pereira decides to include him.

However, the more likely return for Wood could come in the first of back-to-back home matches against Aston Villa.

The Villains are chasing Champions League football but have stuttered a little bit in recent weeks, and Forest’s need for six points from those two games is absolutely huge.

Having Wood back in the starting eleven would be a huge lift for the team and he will be desperate to help the Reds try and remain in the Premier League with some goals before the end of the season.
