Shearer tells Match Of The Day that Welbeck was unlucky to miss out

Alan Shearer pushed the case for the Albion striker after seeing his two goals against Liverpool.

Welbeck was not included in a 35-man group named by Thomas Tuchel for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

Shearer felt he “bullied” Virgil van Dijk and fellow centre-back Ibrahima Konate.

And he compared his record with those of Dominic Solanke at Spurs and Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Leeds.

The ex-Newcastle striker told viewers of BBC TV’s Match Of The Day: “I think he can count himself really unlucky that he is not in the squad.

“I think considering the form he is in and the number of goals you have spoken about, Solanke has got three goals, Calvert-Lewin has got two in the last 12.

“I think he is really unlucky not to be in that 35-man squad.”

Shearer said Liverpool in general were “outfought and bullied by Brighton”.

Wayne Rooney also praised Welbeck and said: “His work rate, his movement, everything about his game really caused Liverpool a big problem.

“He is showing no signs of slowing down.

“He is there working for his team, which he has always done.”

Rooney said Welbeck and his fellow older heads are doing a great job for their side.

He added: “They have got some good young players as well but, when you have got some experienced players, they lead the team.”
