Mark Crossley picks whether Matz Sels or Stefan Ortega should start for Nottingham Forest

The battle to play in goal for Nottingham Forest is heating up with Matz Sels and Stefan Ortega now at the football club vying for the gloves.

Ortega kept goal against FC Midtjylland in midweek as Forest progressed to the quarter-final of the Europa League, with Matz Sels playing in the Premier League of late.

If they’re both fit, who is the number one goalkeeper at Nottingham Forest?

Let us know who should get the nod in the comments below…

Now, there is a big decision for Vitor Pereira to make for today’s game against Tottenham, and Mark Crossley has had his say on the battle to be the Reds’ number one.

Mark Crossley shares why he thinks Matz Sels is Forest’s number one

Sels won the Golden Glove last season, sharing the accolade alongside Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, but this season has been more of a struggle.

Forest haven’t been as solid defensively, and since returning from his latest injury, there have been a couple of errors creeping into his game.

Crossley thinks Sels just has the edge over Ortega at the moment and has been speaking to the Forest Focus podcast to have his say in the goalkeeping situation.

He said: “Ortega has come in and people are saying he’s done well. He’s very good with his feet. Sels won the Golden Glove last season so it’s an interesting choice for Pereira.

“For me, what do I look for, I love Matz Sels, I watched a lot of him last season because I was working at the club, so I saw a lot of him and loved the way he composed himself and how calm he was. I loved that he wasn’t afraid to go forward with the ball and wasn’t too worried about playing out from the back.

“For me those two are the ones vying for the place. It’s good to have competition but if I had to pick one, I’d go with our regular stopper and Golden Glove winner last season, Sels.”

Both Sels and Ortega have something to offer Forest in their quest to win the Europa League and survive relegation this season.

With both of them now fit to play, it will be fascinating to see which one gets the nod to start against Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.
