Boss discusses reports£69M star has held talks with Manchester United–makes big claim

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has firmly dismissed mounting speculation linking captain Bruno Guimarães with a summer move to Manchester United, amid conflicting reports over the Brazilian’s future.

Claims earlier this week suggested Manchester United were in “advanced talks” to sign Guimarães as part of a major midfield rebuild ahead of next season. Reports indicated the Old Trafford club view the midfielder as an ideal replacement for the departing Casemiro, with a deal potentially worth around £60–70 million.

However, Howe has moved quickly to shut down the rumours, labelling them “nonsense” and expressing frustration at the timing of the reports. The Newcastle boss insisted his captain remains fully committed to the club and is focused solely on returning from injury.

Speaking publicly, Howe suggested the speculation was not only inaccurate but also disrespectful, stressing that Guimarães has shown no indication of wanting to leave St James’ Park. He reiterated that the midfielder remains central to Newcastle’s plans and dismissed suggestions of ongoing negotiations with United

Quizzed on reports over Guimarães’ future, Howe was quoted: ‘I don’t even know how to respond to that. It is a waste of my energy.’ Bruno is our captain and he is fully committed at the moment. He is injured at the moment; his only focus is coming back to fitness.’

Despite that, the rumours have not emerged in isolation. Manchester United are widely expected to overhaul their midfield this summer, and Guimarães has long been admired within recruitment circles. His leadership qualities, Premier League experience and technical ability make him a natural target as the club look to rebuild.

Could the move happen?

While Howe’s public stance is emphatic, such denials are not uncommon during transfer windows, particularly when key players are involved. Newcastle’s desire to keep Guimarães is clear—but their position could yet be tested by a substantial offer, especially if financial pressures or a failure to secure Champions League football come into play.

From Manchester United’s perspective, the deal looks logical but difficult. The potential fee, competition from elite European clubs, and Newcastle’s reluctance to sell all present major hurdles.

As it stands, a move to Old Trafford appears unlikely rather than impossible. Unless circumstances shift dramatically—either financially or competitively—Guimarães remaining at Newcastle beyond the summer remains the most probable outcome.
