'Fantastic': West Ham starlet does 'really, really well' on debut as manager raves about new…

Ryan Battrum joined fellow West Ham United starlet Mason Terry on loan at Braintree Town this week and, like the award-hoarding goalkeeper, he has made a very good first impression.

Goalkeeper Mason Terry has accumulated fifteen Man of the Match prizes at the Essex-based outfit.

Build on what was a lively debut in Saturday’s 3-2 defeat by Scunthorpe United, and Ryan Battrum should have one of his own soon enough.

Heartbreak for Herrick and West Ham! 😩

What did you make of that National League Cup final loss?

Battrum, a regular with West Ham United’s Under-21s, joins Braintree Town until the end of the season.

Steve Pitt raves about Ryan Battrum as West Ham United starlet shines at Braintree Town

Just four days after Greg Lincoln’s Hammers lost to Boreham Wood in the National League Cup final – a game in which Battrum played the full 90 minutes and scored in the penalty shoot-out – the versatile right-back/midfielder came flying out of the blocks at Cressing Road.

“They did really, really well, both of them,” Braintree manager Steve Pitt said of Battrum and another debutant, veteran winger Callum Harriott. “I thought they acquitted themselves really, really well.

“Ryan has had a fantastic season at West Ham with their [under] 21s, culminating in his full-game performance at Boreham Wood and obviously scoring a penalty. And he’ll be a big asset to us for the last eight games of the season, including today.”

How do you see his West Ham career developing?

This is Battrum’s first loan spell away from West Ham. Therefore, his first match in a senior team. Albeit that National League Cup run means he has plenty of experience coming up against more grizzled opposition.

Battrum’s versatility is arguably his key asset. Against Boreham Wood, he started out as a right-wing back and then moved into the centre of the park at half-time.

Battrum, who has scored four goals and set up two more in 30 matches for West Ham’s reserves from August to March, made his Braintree debut wide on the right-hand side of midfield.

There would be no eleventh clean sheet of the season for his goalkeeper, though, as Mason Terry opens up about his desire to represent West Ham in the Premier League later down the line.

Terry also admits he hopes to spend time out on loan in the EFL next season. The likes of Josh Ajala, Airidas Golambeckis and the magical Preston Fearon may also be in contention for temporary moves elsewhere.
