Forget Guimaraes–£80M star‘is better’Manchester United signing

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged his former club to abandon plans to sign Bruno Guimarães this summer and instead prioritise a move for Elliot Anderson, as debate intensifies over the club’s midfield rebuild.

Manchester United are widely expected to enter the transfer market for at least one central midfielder, with veteran Casemiro set to depart at the end of the season. Guimarães has been heavily linked, with reports suggesting the club have explored a deal worth around €80 million (£65–70m), although interest from Real Madrid could complicate negotiations.

However, Ferdinand has taken a different stance. Speaking recently, the former defender argued that Anderson is a better stylistic fit for United’s needs, praising the Nottingham Forest midfielder’s energy, physicality and ability to “drive a team.” He suggested the club should prioritise a more dynamic, all-action presence rather than a technically dominant playmaker like Guimarães.

Ferdinand’s comments come amid growing admiration for Anderson, who has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most promising young midfielders. Manchester United are already monitoring the 23-year-old as part of a wider shortlist that includes several domestic-based talents.

Guimarães, by contrast, offers proven leadership and elite-level experience. Newcastle remain determined to keep their captain and have publicly dismissed speculation of a transfer, reinforcing his importance to the squad despite ongoing interest

He was quoted: ‘Beginning of the season everyone was talking about [Carlos] Baleba, he seems to have gone off the boil a little bit form wise,’ Ferdinand said.

‘Elliot Anderson, he seems to have jumped to the front of the queue. I think he’s a wonderful player. I think Elliot Anderson is the right type not only of player but character, I thin he’d be a good addition to the squad.

‘Tonali is a big talent that everyone is talking about, Guimaraes is another big talent that everyone is talking about, but I just think the type of midfielder United need is somebody who is a bit more all-action, who can cover ground, who is dynamic, who is robust, strong, who can drive a team.

‘Right now Anderson seems to be ticking those boxes. But I think there are a few other young guns out there who I won’t mention their names yet because I don’t want anyone else to get on that scent.’

Who would be the better signing?

The debate ultimately comes down to profile versus pedigree. Guimarães is the safer option—an established Premier League star, a leader, and a player capable of immediately elevating United’s midfield. If the club want instant impact and experience, he remains the standout choice.

However, Ferdinand’s argument for Anderson reflects a longer-term vision. Manchester United have increasingly targeted younger, high-energy players who can grow into the team, and Anderson fits that mould perfectly. His athleticism and defensive work rate could complement existing players such as Kobbie Mainoo more naturally than Guimarães’ possession-based style.

In reality, both players would improve the squad, but the likelihood of each move differs. Newcastle’s firm stance makes a deal for Guimarães difficult, while Forest—despite demanding a premium—may be more open to negotiation.
