Referee Anthony Taylor halted Newcastle's match with Sunderland in the second half following a report of discriminatory abuse towards visiting defender Lutsharel Geertruida. The incident took place just five seconds into the second half, with the official calling both captains to the dugout to explain the delay.

At the time, Sven Botman had been fouled and during the stoppage, Sunderland skipper Granit Xhaka spoke to the referee. Once the discriminatory language directed at Geertruida was alleged, the match was brought to a stop. Taylor immediately went to the side of the pitch to speak with captains and the coaching staff.

The Premier League Match Centre explained: "Today’s match between [Newcastle](/latest/newcastle-united-fc) United and Sunderland was temporarily paused during the second half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.

"This is in line with the Premier League's on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all."

Sky Sports' commentary also claimed that there was a report of racial abuse.
