Newcastle United 1-2 Sunderland player ratings: Here’s how Anthony Gordon, Nick Woltemade, Lewis Hall and co fared.

Eddie Howe made two changes from the side that lost 7-2 at Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek with Nick Woltemade replacing the injured Sandro Tonali and Sven Botman coming in for Malick Thiaw, who drops to the bench.

The Magpies were looking to bounce back from their Champions League exit and avenge their 1-0 derby defeat at the Stadium of Light back in December.

Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle an early lead after Luke O’Nien’s pass was intercepted by Nick Woltemade, who found his teammate for his 17th goal of the season.

Newcastle had chances to extend their lead through Anthony Elanga and Sven Botman while Chemsdine Talbi came close for Sunderland as the sides went in 1-0 at half-time.

Sunderland grabbed an equaliser early in the second half as Talbi poked home after Newcastle failed to clear a corner.

Malick Thiaw thought he’d headed Newcastle back in front from a corner but referee Anthony Taylor ruled it out for a foul against Jacob Murphy.

Both sides pushed for a winner but Sunderland found it in the 90th minute through Brian Brobbey.

It sees the Black Cats complete a derby double over the Magpies, who dropped below their rivals heading into the final seven games.

Here are the Newcastle United player ratings from the match...

Aaron Ramsdale - 5

Made a good parry to deny Chemsdine Talbi from distance. Denied Chris Rigg at the near post in the second half. His punch fell to a Sunderland player in the build-up to the equaliser.

Kieran Trippier - 6

Inconsistent with his delivery from set pieces but solid in open play prior to his withdrawal.

Sven Botman - 6

Back in the side and up against a tough physical challenge against Brian Brobbey. Unlucky to hit the post with a good header at the end of the first half. Even more unfortunate to take a blow to the head early in the second half which forced him off.

Dan Burn - 5

Attacked every ball but left exposed in the second half.

Lewis Hall - 5

Put a great ball into the box for Elanga and got forward well. Hit a free-kick straight at the goalkeeper. Decent going forward but not as sharp defensively.

Jacob Ramsey - 6

Kept things ticking over in midfield with a tidy display in and out of possession. Lost a foothold in the game in the second half.

Joelinton - 5

Made his presence felt in midfield but not threatened going forward. Clumsy on the ball at times.

Nick Woltemade - 6

Pressed high to win the ball and set up Gordon. Linked play up well with some clever passes and touches.

Anthony Elanga - 5

Connected well with Lewis Hall’s cross early on to head over the bar. Had another good chance later in the first half but hit the side netting. Didn’t make an impact in the second half before being taken off.

Harvey Barnes - 5

Seen plenty of the ball but not attacked the goal other than a deflected shot in the second half.

Anthony Gordon - 7

Took his goal very well to give Newcastle the lead. Brought real intensity leading the line in the first half but less involved in the second. Blazed over from the edge of the box twice in the closing stages.
